Uramaki

うらまき

Alternative spelling: (うら)(まき)

Uramaki is a type of maki sushi (sushi roll) where the rice is on the outside and the nori (seaweed) is on the inside. This special technique is often referred to as an "inside-out roll." Typical ingredients for uramaki include sushi rice, nori, avocado, cucumber, and fish or crab meat. A well-known example of uramaki is the California Roll.

To prepare uramaki, sushi rice is placed on a bamboo mat (巻き簾, makisu), followed by a nori sheet and the desired ingredients. Everything is then rolled so that the rice is on the outside and the nori is on the inside. The roll is often sprinkled with sesame seeds or fish roe to add extra flavor and texture.
