Hosomaki Sushi(hosomaki zushi)
ほそまきずし
Alternative spelling: 細巻き寿司
Hosomaki Sushi is one of the classic and simplest varieties of sushi rolls. The name is composed of the Japanese words “hosomaki” (細巻き), which means “thin roll,” and “sushi” (寿司). As the name suggests, hosomaki consists of a single, narrow cylindrical roll that usually contains only one or two ingredients.
To prepare hosomaki sushi, a long sheet of sushi rice is spread on a rectangular bamboo mat (makisu). On top of that is placed one ingredient, such as kappamaki (filled with cucumber). The bamboo mat is then rolled tightly to form a compact, cylindrical roll. This roll is then cut into bite-sized pieces and often served with wasabi, shoyu (soy sauce), and gari (pickled ginger).
Hosomaki sushi is a popular choice for a quick snack or as part of a larger sushi assortment due to its simple preparation and compact size. It is a good way to enjoy individual ingredients and flavors without them being overshadowed by other flavors.
